who

Hello! We're ULTRAVIOLET.

Alternatively, you can use other variations like:

what

We're a band! I think we're technically a rock band, but genres are hard.

when

We worked on music together on and off (mostly off) for a long time, but the band started roughly around Late 2022, when we started working on our first release, Fascination.

The name ULTRAVIOLET wasn't cemented until we started working on our next release. We figured that "rovi and PUNKIE" wasn't as cool as an actual band name.

where

...Earth?

why

Fascination initially came from Rovi discovering the anime Bocchi the Rock, getting so invested in it, then asking PUNKIE if she wanted to make an anime song.

We made two more songs after that, then we uploaded it.

how— wait is that actually how you formed

yes

also, ask longer questions.

who are the band members

Rovi arranges/records the instrumentals, and PUNKIE handles all of the vocals, including the writing of all the lyrics. Mixing is primarily done by Rovi, with PUNKIE helping out with the vocals.

where can i find your music

We basically just upload everywhere our publisher (DistroKid) allows us, so if you want to know the full list, you can check it out here.

what got you into music

rovi: our middle school required us to pick an elective while we were there. i chose guitar because music seemed cool and i figured if i had to play an instrument, i'd play the one that a bunch of other people are playing so when i play bad it's not noticable. guitar ended up being pretty relaxing for me so i just kept doing it for easy credits (and performing became fun when i wasn't terribleat it).

music production was a separate thing that happened later. PUNKIE sent a message telling me i should try this online music making website (Soundtrap). i didn't know the first thing about making music, but i got super invested immediately. soon enough i started uploading songs on their platform and then i just kept making stuff

PUNKIE: Discovered it at school

rovi: same

what's your writing process like?

rovi: tl;dr: i give PUNKIE an idea, she says yes/no/maybe on it's potential, then we work on it back and forth until it's done.

all of our music (so far) has started with me developing an instrumental, and seeing if it has potential to be an ULTRAVIOLET song. if it is, i'll usually record a short demo to send to PUNKIE to see if she's interested in making it a full song. if yes, i'll finish arranging the instrumental, and send her a rough mix to work with.

at some point PUNKIE will have written lyrics and recorded vocal tracks to send to me for mixing. by this point i'll usually have a good instrumental mix and (outside of the vocals) i'll just need to lower some of the other tracks to make room, add some sidechain blah blah blah. eventually i typically end up calling PUNKIE to make changes to the vocal mix, and then we'll be done.

i'm not sure if it's a weird thing or not but our music creation process is very isolated from one another. it's very much a situation where all of my creative effort is in the first half, all of hers is in the second, and then we meet up to ensure it meshes properly. i don't think it's a bad thing though, just sorta how we've been doing things

if we want to mix it up, then we'll do so, y'know?

PUNKIE: Yeah

why is PUNKIE's name in all caps

PUNKIE: I like it like that

why is rovi's name in lowercase

rovi: cause rovi/PUNKIE, UPPERCASE/lowercase synergy vibes

what instruments do you guys play

PUNKIE: Rovi plays the guitar. I can play the ukulele and bass, but I haven't done that for any of our songs.

rovi: ALSO i played the drums for like a song or two for school. also the butt drum i guess

PUNKIE: You mean a Cahon??

rovi: yeah that

inspirations?

rovi: hard to say. most of my inspirations aren't typically people, but songs i stumble on — usually from videogames i play, a song from a meme that i (for some reason) mesh super well with, or beats on instagram reels.

usually any song/album i work on is inspired by a single core piece of media. for Fascination, it was Bocchi the Rock. for incognizance, it was comfortable silence by tomcbumpz.

you could argue that having one source of inspiration would make most of music sound derivitave, but i have a complete inability to properly recreate any musical style (half because i don't have the skills to, and half because i just start freestyling at some point)

PUNKIE: Uhhh, anything pop punk. 5SOS and Paramore mainly.

what do you do outside of music

rovi: some type of project, usually. something related to game development, coding, or music stuff outside of U/V.

also LEAGUE OF LEGENDS RAHHHH (mid laner)

PUNKIE: Idk. stuff?
